Understand dental cover before you need it.
It is easy to discover what a policy says about teeth only when you make a claim. Petdentist INSURE explains, in plain English, what pet insurance commonly does and does not cover for dental care, and offers UK pet parents a comparison service in partnership with Quotezone.

What it is
Plain-English education, and a way to compare
Short answer: Petdentist INSURE explains how pet insurance commonly handles dental care (routine care against illness and accident, pre-existing conditions, waiting periods and conditions linked to routine checks) and links UK pet parents to a comparison service in partnership with Quotezone. It is general information, not advice. Policies differ, so always read the policy wording.
Why teeth deserve their own guide
Dental disease is common. Royal Veterinary College VetCompass studies found periodontal disease diagnosed in 12.5% of UK dogs and 15.2% of UK cats in a single year.
Yet dental cover is far from standard. Forbes Advisor UK's guide to pet insurance and dental problems reports that most UK insurers exclude routine cleaning and cosmetic work, keep dental-illness cover for their most comprehensive "lifetime" policies, and exclude pre-existing dental conditions.
Dental cover in plain English
How policies commonly handle dental costs
General education about how policies are often written. It does not describe any particular policy.
| What the cost is for | How policies commonly handle it | What to check in the wording |
|---|---|---|
| Routine and preventive care: check-ups, a routine scale and polish, cosmetic work | Usually excluded | Whether any routine dental benefit is included at all |
| Dental illness: for example, gum disease diagnosed by your vet | Covered by some policies, often only the most comprehensive | Whether dental illness is included, and any separate limit or excess |
| Accidental injury: for example, a tooth broken in a fall | Often handled differently from dental illness | How "accident" is defined, and what evidence a claim needs |
| Pre-existing conditions: anything noted, or showing signs, before cover began | Generally excluded | How "pre-existing" is defined, and how far back your pet's records are checked |
| The waiting period: the first days or weeks of a new policy | Problems that start then are usually not covered | How long it lasts, and whether it differs for accident and illness |
| Conditions linked to routine checks | Some policies require regular dental examinations, and completion of dental work your vet advised | What happens to a claim if a check was missed or advised work was delayed |
Policies differ: always read the policy wording, and ask the insurer if anything is unclear. General UK position based on Forbes Advisor UK, "Does pet insurance cover dental problems?"

Eight questions to ask about dental cover
These work for any policy, from any insurer. Your vet can also tell you what is already noted in your pet's clinical records, which matters for pre-existing conditions.
- Is dental illness covered, or only accidental injury?
- Is there a separate limit or excess for dental claims?
- Does the policy require regular dental checks, and what happens if one is missed?
- If your vet advises dental work, are there conditions about when it is done?
- How are pre-existing conditions defined, and would anything in your pet's records count?
- How long is the waiting period, and is it different for accident and illness?
- Does cover for an ongoing condition continue from one policy year to the next?
- What does the policy exclude as routine or cosmetic?

In the UAE
Pet insurance is a younger market in the UAE. A 2026 guide from WhatsHotInUAE describes several routes to cover, including buying direct from insurers or through brokers and comparison platforms. As in the UK, routine dental cleaning is typically excluded, and cover for emergency dental care varies between providers.
Our comparison service is UK-only for now. If you live in the UAE, the eight questions above apply just as much.

Exactly what Petdentist INSURE is, and is not
Petdentist INSURE is an introducer and affiliate only. It is not an insurer or an insurance broker. It does not give advice or recommendations, and it does not arrange, sell or underwrite policies. If you buy a policy after using the comparison service, Pet Dentist L.L.C-FZ, which operates Petdentist INSURE, may receive a commission from Quotezone. This page names no insurer and ranks no policy, and any policy you take out is a contract between you and the insurer.
Insurance and your pet's mouth
Insurance can help with the cost of veterinary care when it is needed. It does not replace the daily routine at home or a veterinary dental check at least once a year, and some policies expect regular dental checks. In the Petdentist Daily System (Clean, Support, Maintain, Monitor, Professional Care), Petdentist INSURE belongs to the fifth step: planning for the cost of professional care. See the daily routine or find veterinary dental care.
When to see your vet
If you notice loose or wobbly teeth, swelling, discharge, bleeding that does not settle, reluctance to eat, dropping food, drooling, pawing at the mouth or any change in behaviour, please contact your veterinary surgeon promptly. Home care supports professional care — it never replaces it.
Questions people ask
Frequently asked questions
Does pet insurance cover dental care?
It depends on the policy. As a general pattern, routine and cosmetic dental care is usually excluded, dental illness is covered by some policies (often only the most comprehensive), accidental injury to teeth is often handled differently from illness, and pre-existing dental conditions are generally excluded. Policies differ, so always read the policy wording. This is general information, not advice.
Is a routine scale and polish covered by pet insurance?
Usually not. A routine scale and polish is generally regarded as routine or preventive care, which most policies exclude. Some policies may cover dental work your vet carries out because of an illness or an accident, subject to their terms. Check the dental section of the policy wording, and ask the insurer if anything is unclear.
What counts as a pre-existing dental condition?
Generally, anything noted in your pet's records, or showing signs, before your cover began, although each insurer defines it in its own way. Because pre-existing conditions are usually excluded, it helps to understand dental cover before anything appears in your pet's records. Your vet can tell you what is already noted, and the policy wording sets out the definition that applies.
Why do some policies require regular dental checks?
Some policies make dental cover conditional on regular dental examinations, and on any dental work your vet advised being completed. If a check is missed, a later claim could be affected. The conditions vary, so read the policy wording carefully, keep a record of your pet's dental checks, and ask the insurer what happens if an appointment is delayed.
Is Petdentist INSURE an insurer or a broker?
No. Petdentist INSURE is an introducer and affiliate only. It is not an insurer or an insurance broker, it does not give advice or recommendations, and it does not arrange, sell or underwrite policies. The UK comparison service is provided in partnership with Quotezone, and any policy you take out is a contract between you and the insurer.
Does Petdentist earn money from the comparison service?
Pet Dentist L.L.C-FZ, which operates Petdentist INSURE, may receive a commission from Quotezone if you buy a policy after using the comparison service. The education on this page names no insurer and ranks no policy. It is written to help you understand dental cover in general, whichever policy you choose, including one you already hold.
Can I compare pet insurance in the UAE through Petdentist INSURE?
Not yet. Our comparison service is UK-only for now. Pet insurance is a younger market in the UAE, available directly from insurers and through brokers and comparison platforms, and routine dental cleaning is typically excluded there too. The questions on this page apply just as much when you compare policies in the UAE.
Does insurance replace daily dental care at home?
No. Insurance can help with the cost of veterinary care when it is needed, but it does not replace a daily routine at home or a veterinary dental check at least once a year, and some policies expect regular dental checks. If anything about your pet's mouth worries you, contact your veterinary surgeon promptly.
